You’re set up perfect. Backswing looks clean. Then… whiff. A wristy flip and a weak shot that barely makes it to the fairway.

Flipping your wrists at impact is one of the most frustrating swing faults, it feels like a solid move, but it kills your compression, control, and consistency.

Let’s break down why you flip, five of the most common technical fixes (with drills), and why most of them don’t actually stick unless you feel the fix instead of just thinking it.

Key Takeaways

If you're short on time, here's the quick version of what you need to know:

  • Flipping is usually caused by poor rotation, early release, and loss of shaft lean at impact.
  • Technical fixes like shaft lean drills, maintaining lag, or forward shaft angles can help, but they’re tough to repeat without real feedback.
  • Even when you try to "hold" angles, tension or poor timing can sneak back in.
  • That’s why we teach feel-based drills inside Golf Made Easy, so you can stop flipping without having to think about it mid-swing.
  • Bonus: With tools like HackMotion, you can actually see wrist angles in real-time and train like a tour pro (use code BOGEYBOOK for a discount).

Why You Keep Flipping the Club

You’re not flipping because you’re lazy or unathletic. You’re flipping because of one or more of these issues:

  • Your lower body stalls and your hands take over
  • Your weight stays back instead of shifting forward
  • You release the wrist hinge too early
  • You try to “help” the ball in the air
  • You’ve been told to “scoop” instead of compress

It’s super common, and the bad news is, once you start flipping, your body starts to overcompensate in weird ways.

So let’s walk through the common fixes golfers try, and the drills that actually help you feel the difference.

5 Proven Golf Tips to Stop Flipping Your Wrists

1. Lead With Your Turn, Not Your Hands

Flipping happens when your arms and wrists try to do all the work. The real fix is letting your body lead, rotation first, hands second.

When your chest keeps turning, your hands stay passive, and the club naturally releases in the right spot.

Rotation Drill

  1. Grab an alignment stick and place it across your chest
  2. Take slow practice swings, rotating all the way through so your chest faces the target
  3. Focus on not using your hands at all, just body turn
  4. Then grab a club and do the same, hitting half shots with no wrist flip

if your chest stops turning, flipping sneaks right back in.

2. Train Forward Shaft Lean

One of the biggest differences between pros and amateurs? Pros deliver the club with the shaft leaning forward, hands in front of the ball. Amateurs flip it.

The fix: learn what forward shaft lean feels like.

Impact Fix Drill

  1. Set up to the ball, then freeze at impact position: hands ahead of the clubhead, weight left, chest slightly open
  2. Hit 10–15 chip shots from that preset impact position
  3. Focus on keeping the handle ahead all the way through the shot
  4. Gradually move into ¾ swings with the same forward lean

3. Monitor Wrist Angles with HackMotion (Seriously)

One of the biggest breakthroughs we had with flipping was when we actually saw what our wrists were doing.

HackMotion shows your wrist flexion/extension live, so you know if you’re adding or removing angle before impact, no guessing.

Wrist Awareness Drill with HackMotion

  1. Strap on your HackMotion sensor (use code BOGEY for the best price)
  2. Take slow practice swings, watching the flexion/extension graph
  3. Try to maintain wrist flexion through the downswing
  4. Avoid the spike into extension just before impact, that’s the flip
  5. Repeat while gradually building speed, checking feedback after each swing

👉 The cool part? You’ll feel when you’re doing it right. HackMotion just confirms it.

4. Keep Your Weight Forward

If your weight is stuck on your trail side, flipping becomes almost guaranteed. The only way to “save” the shot is with the hands.

Shift your pressure early and let the club naturally trail behind you.

Lead Foot Drill

  1. Place a towel or small object under your lead foot
  2. If you hang back, you’ll feel it lift, that’s the red flag
  3. Focus on getting pressure into your lead foot by the top of the backswing
  4. Hit small shots while maintaining front-side pressure through impact

Once the weight gets forward, you’ll notice it’s way easier to compress without flipping.

5. Pause and Rebuild the Sequence

A quick way to reset your body is to pause at the top and restart the swing in the right order: hips → torso → arms → hands.

This breaks the bad habit of launching with your hands from the top.

Pause & Pump Drill

  1. Swing to the top, then pause for 1–2 seconds
  2. Start the downswing by bumping your hips forward
  3. Keep the wrists quiet, let them “lag”
  4. Hit small shots focusing on sequence and feel
  5. Repeat 10 times, then remove the pause but keep the sequence

This one feels weird at first, but it’s gold for eliminating panic flips.

Why These Fixes Work… But Still Don’t Stick

You’ll probably feel improvement right away with these drills. But here’s the thing, when you step onto the course, you’re not thinking about wrist flexion or pressure shifts. You’re just trying to hit a good shot.

That’s why most golfers revert. You try to remember 5 mechanics mid-round, and your brain short-circuits.

Why We Built Golf Made Easy

We got tired of fixing the same swing faults over and over, so we created a different approach.

Instead of obsessing over angles, we teach you how to use feel-based cues that accomplish the same goals, without needing to think about them.

Inside Golf Made Easy, we’ll show you:

  • How to eliminate wrist flips by learning what stable release feels like
  • The real drills that work under pressure (and yes, we use HackMotion for this too)
  • A complete system to build lasting ball-striking skills that finally stick

Try This Quick Tip Right Now

Try swinging with your chest facing the target as you finish. When your body leads, your hands follow, and flipping disappears.

Final Thoughts

Flipping your wrists isn’t about effort, it’s about sequence, feel, and timing.

If you’re still struggling with inconsistent strikes and weak contact, don’t overthink it. Learn to feel the fix, and trust it when it counts.

That’s the foundation of Golf Made Easy, building real, repeatable moves that work when the heat is on.
